• Power of a Hurricane

  Don't underestimate the power of a hurricane. A hurricane is a natural disaster that can bring devastation anywhere it goes.

  Here's how strong each category of a hurricane can get:

  

  Category 1-2

  Winds from 74 mph up to 110 mph

  Not a major hurricane, but can winds can still cause significant damge.

  

  Category 3

  Winds from 111 mph up to 129 mph

  Major Hurricane: Extremely dangerous winds that will cause major damage to homes and will up-root trees.

  

  Category 4

  Winds from 130 mph up to 156 mph

  Major Hurricane: Will produce catastrophic damage to structures. Power will be down for weeks or months.

  

  Category 5

  Winds from 156 mph and up

  Major Hurricane: Will produce catastrophic damage to structures to the point where places can become uninhabitable. Power will be down for months, and neighborhoods may become isolated due to damage.

• History of Major Hurricanes in the United States

  

  Hurricane Andrew

  Category 5

  One of the most devastating hurricanes to hit the United States. Andrew was responsible for 23 deaths and $26.5 billion in damage in the United States alone.

  August 1992

  

  Hurricane Katrina

  Category 5

  The costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit the United States, causing $75 billion in damage in New Orleans and the Mississippi Coast. Katrina was also responsible for a reported 1200 deaths.

  August 2005

  

  Hurricane Irma

  Category 5

  One of the largest hurricanes to hit the U.S. since Katrina. According to reports, at least 73 people were killed in the Caribbean and the United States.

  August-September 2017

  

  Hurricane Maria

  Category 5

  Hurricane Maria caused a major humanitarian crisis in U.S. Territory Puerto Rico. As of October 2017, 89% of the island is left without power, the death toll has risen to 45 and at least 113 people remain missing.

• Preparing for a Hurricane

  Being prepared can assure your survival during a major hurricane. Here's what you will need to do:

  1. Monitor local news for hurricane updates

  2. Stock up on water: Three gallons of water per person

  3. Stock up on food: buy non-perishable food items that will last at least three days

  4. Prepare a first aid kit How to build one

  5. Keep a flashlight and extra batteries
